Aura Care Living has been making waves in the luxury care home and retirement living market since the launch of its first development in Camberley, Surrey last year.

Founder and CEO Linda Lloyd set up the business after a successful career in the hotel sector. Linda brought Aura Care managing director Cliff Hasler on board in late 2017.

Linda told CHP: “In the olden days, many older people would retire to the seaside and spend their later years in a hotel and I’m sure that was the true beginning of care homes.

“I began my journey within the care sector wanting to use my hotel background to deliver something very special and create a more boutique hotel feel to live in and enjoy whilst still delivering outstanding care.”

Linda describes Aura’s goal as delivering well designed, top quality homes, offering exceptional service and care to its residents.

She takes a hands-on approach with her business having designed the lavish interiors of Aura’s 64-bed boutique style King’s Lodge in Camberley, Surrey and its recently opened Stratton development in Cirencester in the Cotswolds, which combines one- and two-bed apartments with a 61-bed nursing home.

The strikingly-designed homes, which have been developed by sister company, Aura Care Construct, have won industry recognition with King’s Lodge amongst the winners at last year’s Knight Frank Luxury Care Home Awards.

Aura also enjoys heavyweight financial backing with its developments funded by Octopus Healthcare.

By combining high-end retirement living and nursing care on one site, Stratton Court offers a template for future care developments as providers increasingly seek to offer a range of care servicing clients’ needs right through to the end of their lives.

Stratton Court offers all the facilities you would expect from a top hotel, including a fine dining restaurant, bar, cinema and library, in combination with a bespoke activities programme offering everything from cake making and art to pilates classes. Eye catching technology innovations at Stratton Court include an outdoor heated pod, offering residents year-round access to precious sunlight.

Providing nursing care for residents approaching the end of their lives comes with its accompanying risks, however, and entails dealing with residents and their families in a highly charged emotional environment.

CHP witnessed this first hand during a tour of the impressive Stratton Court site when we were approached by an emotional family resident unhappy with the level of support they had been provided for their dying relative.

Linda told CHP: “Unfortunately, it was a very emotional time for the family with their loved one at the end of her life.  It was an extremely difficult time for the family and emotions were running high.

“We have to praise the district nurse who has assisted us with all our decisions.  Sadly the resident has since passed away and flowers and condolences have been sent from the home.”

Undeterred by the incumbent risks of nursing care, Aura plans to roll-out its Stratton model at two further developments in Topsham, Devon and Solihull, West Midlands over the next six months.

Absolutely lovely care home. Staff are always really friendly and helpful. My nan is very well cared for and respected. Often told how she is one of the staff's favourites which is lovely to hear! Very well decorated home right from the reception all the way to the residents' bedrooms and bathrooms. Nothing is ever too much trouble!

Mum went to Stratton Court 3 years ago on respite. She quickly made it her home. As her health deteriorated her care needs increased. Mum had a DNR in place and was adamant she did not want to go to the hospital but to spend her last days at Stratton Court. She got her wish and my wife was by her side when she passed. I would like to thank everyone for their outstanding love and care the nursing they gave to Mum. You truly made it her home. We were overwhelmed by all your support.

The help I had from my carers getting me back to good health was second to none. They are now friends for life, their love and devotion to their job was and is admirable.

My mother continues to receive excellent care and attention at Stratton Court. She is very happy, secure and her needs are met by very caring staff. As a family we feel we could not have made a better choice as we know she is in good hands and her health is well maintained and attended to. She is encouraged to be mobile and join in activities and enjoy the company, food and comfortable environment.

A massive thank you to all the staff. What a difference you made not just in my dad's life but ours too. He called it home, which it had become. His every need was met, you all welcomed him and made him feel safe. Nothing was too much trouble. He was fussy with food but you took that on and exceeded his wishes. When I talk to other people about King's Lodge and how happy my dad was. They say what a difference it is to hear so many positive things. I truly appreciate the love and support you gave us as a family when he sadly didn't wake anymore. Manager and Deputy Manager you made him a home with love and support I will always be grateful.

Mum has been at Kings Lodge for 4 years and she is very happy and settled on one of the dementia units. She is so very well looked after by the wonderful caring staff that work so hard looking after the residents. The activities team also do a fabulous job organising so many different entertainers coming in and all the activities for the residents to watch or get involved in. All the staff are so caring, friendly and welcoming and it's so nice to know my mum is safe and being so well looked after by this lovely team. Thank you all so much.

My husband went into the lodge for respite care. Our daughter and I visited the lodge it was the unknown and a particular member of staff made us feel so at ease as did all the staff they all said hello. It was a massive step for us all, but all the staff made us all feel so very welcome, another staff member and her team were just fantastic with my husband and I, nothing was too much trouble. She always supported me when I was upset and has been such a strength to us, thank you to her. It has been lovely meeting the other residents to and doing activities, the activity coordinators are amazing. Great fun was had by all. Everyone there at Kings Lodge is just brilliant the kindness and how thought they all are is just amazing, It's great how they remember names too. Always smiling, couldn't have wished for a better place for my husband to have respite. I know that if things change I would choose Kings Lodge as it's so reassuring how lovely the staff are and the caring side of things too. Thank you the managers and all your staff.

Amazing place for my nan the best thing we ever did was to put my nan into Kings Lodge my nan loves all the staff there they always make her laugh and smile. I visited Kings Lodge to have a look around for my nan, when I got there I was greeted by the staff in reception who are so lovely, I met both of the managers they were also very lovely and made us all feel welcome and made us part of their family. The staff are so happy and friendly and always stop to talk to us ask us how our day has been they all communicate very well. The whole place was clean and smelt really nice and clean also key-coded doors so no one can just walk in and out. Fantastic place.

Review from Jay T (Brother of Resident)

From my first contact with making arrangements to secure a place for my Brother at Kings Lodge, I was very impressed. It's beautifully reminded me of a 4-star hotel. My Brother moved in September 24 and he absolutely loved it, and immediately felt at home. The management team and reception staff are exceptional, I was welcomed with every visit with a cup of coffee and a chat if I wanted and always made to feel welcome, I felt part of their family. As for the nurses they were incredible, my Brother was terminally ill and this was to be his final resting place, and I know he wouldn't have wanted to of been anywhere else. My brother was a prickly character but the staff just took it all in their stride, they sat with him and talked when he needed to, sang with him and when he was able, danced with him and when he was nearing the end they held his hand and stayed with him, how beautiful was that. When he passed we all cried together, what kindness and humanity these wonderful staff demonstrated.
