HOW CAN REABLEMENT HELP OLDER ADULTS?
The goal of reablement for elderly people is to improve their independence, strength, mobility, balance and confidence. As people get older, these qualities often deteriorate. Sometimes there is a sudden change due to injury, illness or surgery. The best way to keep moving well, for as long as possible, is daily practice. For many people, it’s not safe or possible to practise at home – this is where inpatient or residential rehab is invaluable.
The activities and exercises in reablement vary widely from person to person. Sometimes this involves learning to use specialist equipment to make life easier. For some people, the goal may be to move independently between a bed and chair. Other people may be aiming to return to full independent living, walking outdoors unassisted and even sports. Everyone is different, which is why an individualised approach is key.
Our in-house physiotherapist and specialist nursing team can help patients set achievable goals and work towards them. We also work closely with local authorities, social care teams, occupational health and the NHS for a seamless transition back home after a stay at Stratton Court Care Home.
