Choosing the Right Care Home
September 30, 2020

Establish the level of care on offer, and the level of care you need.

One of the biggest sources of confusion we see and hear from those enquiring at Aura Care is establishing what type of care we offer and the type of care potential residents need. There are varying levels of care available in homes. Some specialise in those with degenerative condition such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and End of Life Care

There are also differences between those offering Care and Nursing. Care homes will not have Registered Nurses working within the home.

What is the difference between a Care Home and a Nursing Home?

A care home offers 24 hours care to their residents which is provided by qualified Care team. This is often for those who need help with their mobility or maybe finding the general activities of daily living have become challenging.

A Nursing Home provides 24 hour care to their residents through Registered Nurses who are supported by a team of experienced carers . This is often for those who need the specialist input from a qualified Nurse to support them with more complex health concerns.

It is important to think about the future as well as the needs of your relative at the moment. While your relative may only need help with basic things such as mobility issues, they may well need nursing care in the not too distant future.

My parent has dementia, do they need a Care home or Nursing Home?

The answer here is not as simple, Dementia Care is another complex offering that is not offered by all Care Homes. You need to ensure that your chosen Care or Nursing Home, offer specialised Dementia Care that offers the right type of understanding and compassionate care for your loved one.

Aura Care in Camberley and Stratton court offer varying levels of care Nursing Care, Residential Care, Dementia care and specialise in End of life care.

Read a brochure and website, check on websites such as carehome.co.uk to read reviews.

Reviews are essential to give you a good understanding of what the care environment is really like. Realistically, not all reviews can be positive, but the good news is that often shows that they are not filtered or fraudulent. carehome.co.uk is a fantastic resource as it verifies all reviews are genuine, plus provides you with a host of information including the levels of care available, galleries and brochures.

Brochures are a lovely guide to show you some of the facilities on offer and can give you an idea as to the look and feel of the home itself.

Another essential thing to research at are the social media pages of the homes. This should show you the varying activities on offer, positive feedback from their followers and lots of exciting things to look forward to. Ensuring there are lots of variety of activities and great looking food is going to give you a good idea as to what life is really like every day in the home.

Contact care home manager to organise a visit.

Speak to the Care Home Manager and organise a visit for yourself and your loved one. You can always go on your own first as it may be overwhelming for your loved one first time and they can come with you for the next visit. We often recommend people to go and visit a number of homes and pick their favourite three and then take their loved ones to visit. This way you can really compare a variety of homes and offerings and find the perfect fit which works for you and your family.

Check CQC report to discuss at the meeting with the care home manager.

CQC reports can be really useful in discussing areas where the care home has excelled and improved. CQC reports can often be outdated being over 3 years old, so many changes may have occurred since them. However, by using them in your discussions with the Care Home Manager, you can see where the home has improved over the past few years and how they have changed. It provides a great way to really ask the questions you need and get much more information as to how the home runs.

The main thing we advise those looking for a care facility for their loved one is to ask as many questions as you can think of. A good care facility will be more than willing to guide you through the very difficult and emotional decision to place a relative or friend in a care facility so ensuring it is the right place is essential to ensure everyone is happy with their decision.

Absolutely lovely care home. Staff are always really friendly and helpful. My nan is very well cared for and respected. Often told how she is one of the staff's favourites which is lovely to hear! Very well decorated home right from the reception all the way to the residents' bedrooms and bathrooms. Nothing is ever too much trouble!

Review from K M (Son of Resident)

Mum went to Stratton Court 3 years ago on respite. She quickly made it her home. As her health deteriorated her care needs increased. Mum had a DNR in place and was adamant she did not want to go to the hospital but to spend her last days at Stratton Court. She got her wish and my wife was by her side when she passed. I would like to thank everyone for their outstanding love and care the nursing they gave to Mum. You truly made it her home. We were overwhelmed by all your support.

Review from Susan N (Daughter of Resident)

My mother continues to receive excellent care and attention at Stratton Court. She is very happy, secure and her needs are met by very caring staff. As a family we feel we could not have made a better choice as we know she is in good hands and her health is well maintained and attended to. She is encouraged to be mobile and join in activities and enjoy the company, food and comfortable environment.

A massive thank you to all the staff. What a difference you made not just in my dad's life but ours too. He called it home, which it had become. His every need was met, you all welcomed him and made him feel safe. Nothing was too much trouble. He was fussy with food but you took that on and exceeded his wishes. When I talk to other people about King's Lodge and how happy my dad was. They say what a difference it is to hear so many positive things. I truly appreciate the love and support you gave us as a family when he sadly didn't wake anymore. Manager and Deputy Manager you made him a home with love and support I will always be grateful.

Review from Louise W (Daughter of Resident)

Mum has been at Kings Lodge for 4 years and she is very happy and settled on one of the dementia units. She is so very well looked after by the wonderful caring staff that work so hard looking after the residents. The activities team also do a fabulous job organising so many different entertainers coming in and all the activities for the residents to watch or get involved in. All the staff are so caring, friendly and welcoming and it's so nice to know my mum is safe and being so well looked after by this lovely team. Thank you all so much.

Review from Caire J (Wife of Resident)

My husband went into the lodge for respite care. Our daughter and I visited the lodge it was the unknown and a particular member of staff made us feel so at ease as did all the staff they all said hello. It was a massive step for us all, but all the staff made us all feel so very welcome, another staff member and her team were just fantastic with my husband and I, nothing was too much trouble. She always supported me when I was upset and has been such a strength to us, thank you to her. It has been lovely meeting the other residents to and doing activities, the activity coordinators are amazing. Great fun was had by all. Everyone there at Kings Lodge is just brilliant the kindness and how thought they all are is just amazing, It's great how they remember names too. Always smiling, couldn't have wished for a better place for my husband to have respite. I know that if things change I would choose Kings Lodge as it's so reassuring how lovely the staff are and the caring side of things too. Thank you the managers and all your staff.

Amazing place for my nan the best thing we ever did was to put my nan into Kings Lodge my nan loves all the staff there they always make her laugh and smile. I visited Kings Lodge to have a look around for my nan, when I got there I was greeted by the staff in reception who are so lovely, I met both of the managers they were also very lovely and made us all feel welcome and made us part of their family. The staff are so happy and friendly and always stop to talk to us ask us how our day has been they all communicate very well. The whole place was clean and smelt really nice and clean also key-coded doors so no one can just walk in and out. Fantastic place.

Review from Jay T (Brother of Resident)

From my first contact with making arrangements to secure a place for my Brother at Kings Lodge, I was very impressed. It's beautifully reminded me of a 4-star hotel. My Brother moved in September 24 and he absolutely loved it, and immediately felt at home. The management team and reception staff are exceptional, I was welcomed with every visit with a cup of coffee and a chat if I wanted and always made to feel welcome, I felt part of their family. As for the nurses they were incredible, my Brother was terminally ill and this was to be his final resting place, and I know he wouldn't have wanted to of been anywhere else. My brother was a prickly character but the staff just took it all in their stride, they sat with him and talked when he needed to, sang with him and when he was able, danced with him and when he was nearing the end they held his hand and stayed with him, how beautiful was that. When he passed we all cried together, what kindness and humanity these wonderful staff demonstrated.
